School Direct course are designed for trainees to train and teach simultaneously. Schools work closely with the MSC to choose candidates that will suit the department and develop well in the school placement. Partnership Schools will look favourably at an application from an MSC trainee, but there is no guarantee of a job at the end of the course.

98% of our 2016/17 cohort, are currently employed as teachers.  62% are employed by partner schools.

School Direct courses run from 1st September until 30th June.  Trainees who pass the course will gain QTS and have the opportunity to undertake a PGCE (postgraduate certificate in education) alongside.

Every MSC Trainee will train in 2 schools. The course is approximately 180 days, 30 of these days will be spent in a complimentary second school experience.

The principles of School Direct courses are equal to University led training, trainees can apply for tuition fee loans and maintenance support to help with living costs throughout the training year.

Trainees may also be eligible for a tax-free bursary.

Trainees on a School Direct, fee paying course will pay tuition fees of £9,000.  Trainees may be eligible for a tuition fee loan from Student Finance England. Bursaries are available for some subjects (see below). These are paid in monthly instalments to the trainee for a total of 10 months. Home students may be eligible for a repayable maintenance loan.  This grant is means-tested and you can apply through Student Finance England.

For further information regarding financial support go to the student loan student finance company or visit our finance page.

Training bursaries will be available for some applicants and will vary according to your degree class and the subject in which you training.

New! Bursaries for 2018/19 academic year.

PhDs and Masters Degrees can enhance your entitlement to a bursary.

Please note that School Direct information from the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) indicates that there is a reasonable expectation of employment within the partnership of schools. However this is not guaranteed. Our partnership schools will look favourably on high quality trainees from the MSC. The availability of such a post will be dependent on the staffing requirements and the budgets of individual schools. Candidates will be considered as part of the competitive selection process of the schools. Historically a high percentage of MSC trainees start their teaching career within Somerset.
